Baligjagic-Adler receives an early Christmas Present

On Wednesday night at the Olympic Arena, Sarajevo, Bosnia, Irma Balijagic-Adler, 125½, of Bosnia, won by a controversial 10-round split decision over Jeannine Garside, 125¾, of Canada. The two were fighting for the WIBA World Featherweight title. One of the judges gave the fight to Garside [98-92], the other two gave it to Balijagic-Adler [96-97, 95-96].

Here is Marty Gervais' post bout summary:

Published: Thursday, December 18, 2008

They call it the sweet science. But for Jeannine Garside, it was science gone awry as she saw her world featherweight boxing title slip away Wednesday night to her challenger Irma Baligjagic Adler, the darling of Sarajevo.
"I was robbed," said Garside as she stormed back to the dressing room.

"I am still the champ!"

In this 10-round World International Boxing Association title bout at Oly-mpic Hall that drew more than 600 boxing fans, Garside battered her opponent, knocking her down twice but, in the end, the judges scored it a close victory for Adler.
The 26-year-old Sarajevo criminology student confessed her surprise at the win, and praised Garside.
"I was truly surprised," Adler said. "Jeannine is a great fighter. But this is a dream come true for me, and for my country. I've been prepared for this fight for months. I'm sorry for Jeannine."
Andre Gorges, Garside's coach, was in shock at the loss.
"She was throwing combinations all night, and from about the sixth to the 10th round, she was hitting her with straight lefts," Gorges said.
"There is no way she lost!"
The judges saw it differently.

SPLIT DECISION

They scored it 98-92 for Garside, but 96-95 and 96-95 for Adler.
It was in the fourth round that Garside put her opponent on the mat, cutting her over the left eye.
The taller and leaner Adler, who had tremendous reach and stayed in a crouch most of the night, looked like she was ready to give it up, but her corner kept shouting for her to stay.
Garside repeatedly backed up Adler, but her opponent managed to counter with hard jabs.
"Jeannine didn't put her away, and that's what she had to do," Gorges said.
After the fight, Garside sat on a bench in the dressing room, her face buried in her hands that were still bandaged for the fight.
"I don't want to be a sore loser, and I want to be nice but I can't," Garside said. "They totally tricked me. There is no way I could've lost that fight, believe me.
"What did I do wrong?"
In winning this fight, Adler, who has only fought professionally for two years, remains undefeated (9-0).
Garside, who won the WIBA title in Edmonton Nov. 15, 2005 when she beat Lisa Brown, is now 7-3.
Still, there was one ray of sunshine on this rainy Sarajevo night.
Within minutes of returning to her dressing room, a number of fans stood outside, and knocked on the door.
Then, a Sarajevo man, who had managed to talk his way past the guards, stepped in to say, "I want to meet the champ."

Garside looked pleased and smiled through her tears, and said, "That's who I am."
