Gorges and Kooner Win Unanimous Decisions

Jr. Welterweight "Gorgeous" Andre Gorges won a five round decision over Neopit, Wisconsin’s Dean Peters, Jr. by scores of 50-45, 49-46 x 2. Both seemed tentative, with often more stares than punches, but Gorges was sharper and more effective when they did exchange. Gorges moves to 9-1 with 6 KO’s.

Also, Featherweight Andrew Kooner overcame a cut near his left eye to take the nod over six rounds against Norman Allen of Toledo. Kooner was coming off a first round cut eye TKO loss in his last fight and had to be thinking “not again” when the blood started to flow early in the third round. He stayed steady and closed strongly dropping Allen for counts in both the fifth and sixth rounds to win by scores of 59-53 and 58-54 x 2 to go to 10-2 with 4 KO’s.

Gorges Suffers First Loss

In a battle of undefeated pros, Las Vegas’ Abdan Lozano handed “Gorgeous”Andre Gorges his first loss, winning unanimously.

Gorges edged the first, while Lozano tried to figure out his opponent’s awkward attacks. A fight on the inside proved the only way to beat Gorges and, by the third, uppercuts on the inside put him ahead on the cards.

With less success in the pocket, Gorges tried to keep to the outside and catch Lozano coming in, with loopy lefts. Success was marginal for Lozano’s constant pressure and cleaner, harder punches on the inside. The loss drops Gorge's record to 8-1.

Garside Wins Title at Home!

Jeannine "Heartless" Garside scored a unanimous decision victory Saturday night in Duncan, British Columbia, over Brooklyn, New York's Dominga Olivo. Garside, a two-divisional world champion, collected the WBC International Featherweight Title for her efforts.

Jeannine suffered a second-round headbutt that opened a cut over her left eye that later required four stitches.

This was the first time a boxing event of this status has been held on Vancouver Island and the crowd loved the fact that the main event was one of their own. Future events are planned in B.C.

Also competing on June 6th in Montreal was Heavyweight Ali Mansour (6-0 3KO) who scored a 40-36, 39-37, 39-37 decision over trial-horse Stephane Tessier.

Garside Returns to Duncan, B.C.

Border City's Jeannine "Heartless" Garside, a Duncan-born-and-raised boxer, is set to fight for a title in front of a home crowd at the Island Savings Centre. Garside will take on Brooklyn's Dominga Olivo for the WBC International Featherweight Title on June 6.

"This is the first time this has ever happened on Vancouver Island, let alone in Duncan," said Wally Petrovic, owner of Final Round Martial Arts centre, and the man who is bringing the bout to Duncan. "This is one of the biggest fights we've ever put on."

Now residing in Windsor, Ont., Garside, who turned 31 on April 14, still has plenty of friends and family in Duncan, and Petrovic knows she'll make for a hot ticket in her first fight at home since her amateur debut in 1997.

"Jeannine is a big draw, especially here, because she was born and raised in Duncan," he said. Garside's record stands at seven wins, three losses and one draw, with three knockouts. Her last bout was a Dec. 17 fixture in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, which ended in a controversial win by hometown favourite Irma Balijagic-Adler -- and the loss of Garside's Women's International Boxing Association title.

Petrovic has known Garside since she took up the sport of boxing more than a decade ago. "I've known her since she was an amateur," he said. "She used to spar with one of my kickboxers. She was always an amazing body-puncher. She has real hard punching power. She's a tough person. It doesn't matter who she fights, it'll be tough for her opponent."

Olivo, 37, has a record of seven wins, four losses and one draw. - Kevin Rothbauer, The Citizen 2009

Gorgeous Dominant in Vegas

"A perfect record was ended in the final bout of the night as Canadian boxer Andre Gorges defeated Gabriel Del Real by unanimous decision. In what much of the crowd considered the most entertaining fight of the entire event, the two welterweights wasted no time trying to hurt each other as the bout was scheduled for just four rounds.

Gorges landed a beautiful combination to Del Real's face early in the second round that threatened to hurt Del Real, but the Californian used some timely clinches to stay on his feet and ended up lasting the entire fight" (Brett Okamoto, Las Vegas Sun).

Gorges kept his unbeaten record in tact as he won a unanimous decision over Del Real, winning by margins of 40-36 (twice) and 39-37. The junior welterweight kept his opponent at bay with a stiff jab and solid footwork. 'Gorgeous' ascended to 8-0 (6) while Del real, from Fairfield, CA, dipped to 3-1 (2).

"Boxing Athlete Commits Anti-Doping Rule Violation"

Alison Hunter - 2009 National Champion!

After losing in the finals at the Canadian Boxing Championships in January to a drug-enhanced athlete, Alison Hunter fought her way through to the finals at the Final Team Selection in Alberta one month later - only to lose to the same fighter again. Months later, we find out Hunter should not have had to face Galle a second time:

"The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) announced today that Amanda Galle, a boxing athlete, committed an anti-doping rule violation. The violation occurred following an in-competition doping control conducted on January 24, 2009 in Trois-Rivières, Quebec.

Ms. Galle’s anti-doping rule violation was a result of her urine sample returning an adverse analytical finding for Nandrolone, a prohibited substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List.

In response to the CCES’ notification of the anti-doping rule violation, Ms. Galle exercised her right to a hearing under the rules of the Canadian Anti-Doping Program (CADP). Ms. Galle, in seeking to halve the customary two-year sanction, testified at her hearing that her conditioning coach had "mistakenly injected her with deca-durabolin" instead of her usual vitamins B6 and B12.

However, the arbitrator found that "Ms. Galle…failed to demonstrate that she bears no significant fault or negligence in relation to the violation." She determined that Ms. Galle had committed an anti-doping rule violation and imposed a sanction of two years sport ineligibility."
