National Senior Championships Results

Katie "Silence" Dunn won her fourth Canadian Gold Medal this weekend in Richmond, British Columbia. Dunn won her 63 kg. Semi-Final over Desni Boisvert of Quebec by a score of 29-15. In the final, Katie defeated Alberta's Erin Krekoski by RSCO2 (out-scored, referee stops contest, round 2). With the win, Katie matches current Professional World Champion Jeannine "Heartless" Garside as Border City's only 4-Time National Champions!

Ontario Championships Final Results

Border City Finishes with 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze Medals

Josh Cameron was the final Border City Boxing Club competitor to compete in the Provincial Boxing Championships at the Holiday Inn on Saturday. Cameron stopped Ottawa's Henri Lopez in the third round to capture the Gold Medal in the Junior 64 kg. Open-Class Division.

Cameron's Gold medal brings Border City's final Medal count to three Gold (Ali Youssef, Cadet-C 60 kg.; Shelby Bialkowski, Cadet-C 52 kg.; and Cameron), one Silver (Alison Hunter, Senior 60 kg.); and two Bronze (Andre Gorges, Senior 69 kg.; and Lukas Welniak, Senior 81 kg.).

Dunn Suffers Tough Defeat to Taylor

In a Women's bout that was billed as Pan-Am Champion (Katie Dunn) vs. European Champion (Katie Taylor) at the Men's World Championships in Chicago on Saturday, Border City Boxing Club's Dunn never had a chance to get started. The bout was over after the first round when Taylor (Ireland) had accumulated a 15 point spread over Dunn (Canada). The 2006 World Champion (Taylor) handed the 2006 World Bronze Medallist (Dunn) her first defeat since the World Championships in India last November.

Athletes Earn Diplomas

Border City is so proud of two of our teammates, Tamara Bosnjak and Eyobe Amberber, who graduated from Riverside Secondary School on the weekend. Bosnjak, a student at the University of Windsor, looks forward to her first bout, while Amberber, a student at the University of Toronto, was the 2007 Provincial Champion and represented Ontario at the Canada Games in the Yukon Territory last March. Way to go, boxers!

Dunn Captures Pan-Am Gold, Best Boxer Award

Katie "Silence" Dunn defeated Argentina's Celeste Peralta by a 22-3 score to capture her third consecutive Pan-American Title last night in Ecuador. The Canadian Champion also won the Best Boxer of the Tournament Award.

Next up for Dunn is a showdown with 2006 World Champion, Katie Taylor of Ireland at the Men's World Boxing Championships in Chicago in November.

Dunn Advances at the Pan Am Championships

Katie "Silence" Dunn won her second bout at the 2007 Pan Am Championships in Ecuador on Sunday night. Dunn defeated USA Champion Quantia Underwood by a 20-10 score. Argentina's Celeste Peralta was also victorious over Ecuador's Celinda Mejia, setting up the final, Dunn versus Peralta, for Tuesday.

The defending Pan Am Champion, Dunn has also been scouted by AIBA who have selected her to showcase female boxing at the Men's World Championships, next month in Chicago. "This exhibition is very important as this will be done in front of the IOC President and others, who will determine if they will make female boxing a part of the 2012 Olympics." Dunn will face 2006 World Champion Katie Taylor of Ireland on the finals day of the Men's Championships.

Dunn is successful at the Pan Am Championships

Canadian Champion Katie Dunn defeated Brazil's Carla Fleita in the preliminary round of the Pan Am Championships last night. Dunn stopped Fleita on points in the second round after giving her an 8 count in the first. Dunn faces USA's Quantia Underwood in preliminary action on Sunday.

Dunn Defends in South America

National Champion Katie "Silence" Dunn leaves Wednesday for the 2007 Women's Pan-Am Championships. The Championships will be held in Ecuador, from October 4 - 10. Dunn won a Gold medal at the previous two Pan-Am Tournaments and looks to defend her title later this week.

Border City Rolls at Club Show XV

The Border City Boxing Club had three of its athletes win bouts at its 15th installment of its in-house boxing card series, and its 3rd Annual Bill White Memorial Fightcard. Lukas "The Rabbit" Welniak won by split decision over KAYO Boxing's David Jenner of Chatham; "Gorgeous" Andre Gorges won by split decision over Fighting Alliance's Steve Rolls of Toronto; and "Jackknife" Josh Cameron won by unanimous decision over East Windsor's Karim Ebead. For Cameron the evening was a historic one, in that he competed in his 100th career bout. Cameron, Welniak and Gorges are in preparation for their Provincial Championships this fall.

Garside Stops Dierdorff in Sixth

WIBA super-featherweight champion Jeannine "Heartless" Garside TKOed Illinois' Brooke "No Mercy" Dierdorff in the sixth round of their scheduled six round bout on Friday night at the Meadowbrook Music Festival in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Garside came out aggressive early knocking Dierdorff down at the end of the first round with an extended flurry along the ropes. Dierdorff recovered and the two women went to war in thrilling fashion. Garside dropped Dierdorff again in the third and twice more in the sixth before finally earning the TKO from referee Frank Garza at 1:10. Afterward, Garside expressed her desire to unify the division, while Dierdorff hoped for a rematch. Garside's record improved to 8-0-1, while Dierdorff's fell to 4-1-1. Click here for more!

Cameron Nominated for WESPY

"Jackknife" Josh Cameron is thrilled to be nominated for the Windsor Essex Sports Persons of the Year Award for 2007. Cameron won four bouts in the Yukon Territory earlier this year to capture the Canadian Boxing Championship. The WESPY Awards Ceremony is to be held at the Caboto Club on September 25. Cameron was a member of the 2007 Canadian team at the Brandenburg Cup in Germany and won his bout in a dual meet with Italy. "This is such a big award, I never thought I'd get a chance to be nominated," Cameron said. "This means a lot. I've never been nominated for anything other than fight of the night before. It makes me more nervous than before a fight thinking about it." Despite his stellar year, Cameron was caught completely off guard by his nomination. "I'm only 17 and I didn't think there was a chance," Cameron said. "I thought it always goes to older guys and university athletes. I'm really honoured."

Cameron and Welniak Win

Two Border City Boxing Club members competed and were victorious on Saturday night in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Lukas "The Rabbit" Welniak won a unanimous decision over Benton Harbor's Ben Williams. Williams had a memorable bout with Border City Hall of Famer, "Dangerous" Dave Robinson four years ago. In Saturday's Main Event, Canadian Champion "Jackknife" Josh Cameron won a unanimous decision over Kalamazoo's Brian McKinny. Welniak and Cameron will compete next at the Border City Boxing Club on September 29th at 7:30 PM.

Garside to Face Fellow-Undefeated in Michigan

World Featherweight Champion Jeannine "Heartless" Garside will be facing Illinois' Brooke Dierdorff on September 21st at the Meadowbrook Music Festival in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Dierdorff sports an impressive amateur background and an undefeated professional record that includes a win over superstar Mia St. John. Dierdorff has made it clear that she also intends to also use Garside's good name as a stepping stone in her own budding career (to read Dierdorff's comments, click here).

The Border City Boxing Club is extremely proud of 2007 Provincial Champion Eyobe "Sharpshooter" Amberber, who leaves our club on Saturday. Amberber will be working towards his Business Degree at the University of Toronto. All the very best to Eyobe, in this, his most important fight!

Gorges, Gervais and Canty in Iraq

"Gorgeous" Andre Gorges was accompanied by Training Camp Director, Josh Canty and Writer, Marty Gervais in Iraq for a two-week Training Camp in August, 2007. Canty coached the Iraqi National Team in preparation for their Olympic Qualifier, the Arab Games, which takes place in Cairo, Egypt in November. Gorges 3-peats, Dunn Wins First Ringside Belt

Border City Boxing Club's "Gorgeous" Andre Gorges won his third consecutive Welterweight Championship Belt at the Ringside World Championships in Kansas City on Saturday evening. Gorges won his third bout of the tournament on Saturday over Michigan's Willie Price. Also representing Border City was Canadian Champion Katie "Silence" Dunn, who won her first Ringside Championship, also winning three bouts. Dunn was supposed to be representing Canada in Hungary but traveled to Kansas City on short notice when her category in Hungary was filled before Boxing Canada entered her. Fortunately, Dunn faced both the American Champion in the semifinals and the U.S. B-Team Boxer, Krysta Rettic of Oklahoma, in Saturday's final en route to the Championship. Also representing Border City in Kansas City were Canadian Champion"Jackknife" Josh Cameron, who went 1-1, and Provincial Champion Shelby "Lionheart" Bialkowski, who lost to Hawaii's Alyssa Kane in the final.

Mexican Challenge Results

Cameron and Gorges Display their Belts from Saturday

"Gorgeous" Andre Gorges and "Jackknife" Josh Cameron both won two bouts over the weekend. On Friday night, in Highland Michigan, Cameron defeated Lansing's Cody Varmadune, while Gorges defeated Lansing's Brandon Larraden, both by unanimous decision. Cameron won again on Saturday in Detroit, defeating Chicago's Alex Martin by unanimous decision, while Gorges also scored a unanimous decision victory over Chicago's Naiton Valenzula. Also representing Border City on Saturday was Shelby "Lionheart" Bialkowski, who dropped a split-decision to Michigan's Valerie Faraley. With the loss, Bialkowski's record fell to 5-1.

The Border City Boxing Club Hosted its 14th in-house card on Saturday afternoon. The card featured Border City's 2007 Canada Games Gold Medallist, "Jackknife" Josh Cameron. Cameron faced 2006 National Champion Steve Wilcox of Hamilton's Steeltown Boxing Club. Cameron defeated Wilcox by unanimous decision in the Main Event of the evening.

Border City Club Show XIII Results

The Border City Boxing Club hosted a nine-bout fight card Saturday night at 1072 Drouillard Road. In the Main Event, "Gorgeous" Andre Gorges won a spilt-decision over Detroit's Kronk Boxing Team's LeAndre White. Border City's Lukas "The Rabbit" Welniak won a unanimous decision over Orangeville's Paul Bonning, and Canada Games teammates "Jackknife" Josh Cameron and Eyobe "Sharpshooter" Amberber fought a three-round exhibition with each other. Cameron, 2007 National Champion, will be representing Canada in Germany later this month.

Dunn Competes in Turkey

Canadian Champion Katie "Silence" Dunn defeated France's El Hadratý Fazýola on points 31 to 19 in preliminary action in Istanbul. In the semi-finals, Katie dropped a decision to Amanda Coulson from England.

Border City Club Show XII a huge success!

On April 13, 2007 the Border City Boxing Club was packed to capacity with local boxing fans. The night featured two of Border City's 2007 National Champions. In the co-main event Katie "Silence" Dunn defeated 147lbs National Silver medallist Erin Krowkowski by unanimous decision. Dunn was recently named Female Boxer of the Year by Boxing Ontario and will be honoured April 21, 2007 in St. Catharines, ON.

The main event featured Canada Games Gold Medallist "Jackknife" Josh Cameron defeating Atlas Boxing Club's Paul Keeler-Lavin by unanimous decision. Border City's Lukas "The Rabbit" Welniak competed for the first time after spending thirteen months in the Polish Army and earned a unanimous decision over KAYO Boxing Club's David Jenner.

Border City's coach Margaret Canty has been inducted into Boxing Ontario's "Legends Ring of Fame: Boxer" and will be honoured with Dunn in St. Catharines on April 21, 2007.

Border City's Night of Excellence at the Penalty Box

Not only did Border City capture National Titles at all levels (Dunn at Senior, Cameron at Junior, and Youssef at Cadet-C), but we had five Open Class Provincial Champions and a Professional World Champion in Jeannine Garside. What a year!

Cameron Captures National Title

After winning his first three bouts of the tournament by decision, "Jack-knife" Josh Cameron stopped Newfoundland's Mponda Kalunga-Loksa in the third round of the Final in the 64kg Division. Not only is Cameron the best in his class in the nation, but he also earned bragging rights at home. Josh's father Jimmy won a bronze medal at the 1975 Canada Games.

Cameron Advances to the Finals

"Jack-knife" Josh Cameron upset 3-time National Champion Mikaël Zewski of Quebec in Semi-Final action tonight at the Canada Games in Whitehorse, Yukon. Zewski, a veteran of over 118 fights, came out strong the first two rounds; however, Cameron craftily out-boxed Zewski over the final two stanzas, and secured a 38-24 victory. Cameron faces Mponda Kalunga-Loksa of Newfoundland on Friday in the Finals.

Cameron Advances to the Semi-Finals

"Jack-knife" Josh Cameron defeated Alberta's Angus John Boynton-McNeilly by a score of 31-23 at the Canada Games this evening. As Open Ringside Champion, McNeilly provided an intriguing test early on for Cameron; however, Josh's endurance and late-bout run proved too much for McNeilly. Tomorrow night Josh faces Quebec's Mikaël Zewski in the Semi-Finals. Cameron lost at the Nationals two years ago when he suffered a broken hand in the second round of action and lost by a 2-point decision. Cameron is now guaranteed to at least tie his father's Bronze Medal at the 1975 Canada Games.

Border City's other representative at the Games, Eyobe "Sharpshooter" Amberber, lost a tough bout against last year's Silver Medallist, Chris Plaitis of Quebec.

Cameron Advances to Quarter-Finals

"Jack-knife" Josh Cameron defeated Manitoba's Brandt Butt by a 38-29 score in the preliminary round at the Canada Games in White Horse, Yukon. Butt made the move to Open Class after capturing the Ringside Novice Title in 2006. Cameron will move on to face Alberta's Angus McNeilly Tuesday night. Cameron's teammate Eyobe Amberber competes Tuesday afternoon against 2006 National Silver Medallist, Chris Plaitis of Quebec.

The Border City Boxing Club's three representatives have arrived in the Yukon! Ontario Team Captain"Jack-knife" Josh Cameron, Coach Josh Canty, and Bantamweight Eyobe "Sharpshooter" Amberber have arrived safely in Whitehorse and look forward to the opening of competition in two short days!

Youssef Wins Canadian Title, Best Boxer Award

Ali "Junior" Youssef with Gold Medal and Best Boxer Belt

Ali "Junior" Youssef knocked out British Columbia's Stefan Melideo with a body shot in the first round of their Finals bout in the 119 lbs. Division at the Canadian Championships in St. Catharines. Youssef had defeated Toronto's Martin Halibus by a 21-7 score on Friday, then New Brunswick's Mitch Cormier by first round stoppage on Saturday en route to the Gold Medal Final on Sunday. After the tournament, Youssef was awarded the Canada's Best Cadet-C Boxer Award.

Youssef Battles for National Title

15 year-old Ali "Junior Youssef" will be competing for his first Cadet-C National Title this weekend in St, Catharines. Youssef (25-5) won his second Provincial Title late last year to go along with his 2004 Ringside Championship and 2005 Quebec Cup Championship. Youssef will be joined by teammate and Senior Provincial Champion, Alison "The Cat" Hunter, who will be boxing-off in the 132 lbs. Division.

Dunn Earns 3rd Consecutive National Title

Katie "Silence" Dunn (right) won the Canadian Title for the third straight year in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec. Dunn first dispatched of Claudia Renkwitz of the Windsor Boxing Club in the second round of their semi-final bout, then defeated Quebec's Desni Boisvert by a score of 39-25 in the final. "Gorgeous" Andre Gorges (middle) dropped a 29-25 score to reigning National Champ and eventual Gold Medallist, Kevin Bizier of Quebec, while Alison "The Cat" Hunter (left) lost to defending Champion and eventual Gold Medallist Genevieve Lachance, also of Quebec.

Bialkowski Moves to 5-0

Shelby "Lionheart" Bialkowski won two bouts in Illinois to improve her record to 5-0! Dustin Heggie and Marvin Vasquez dropped decisions.
