GARSIDE DEFEATS LISA BROWN TO BECOME THE NEW WIBA WORLD CHAMPION

In a World Title Fight involving two Canadians, The Border City Boxing Club's Jeannine "Heartless" Garside proved a lot of boxing experts wrong dropping WIBA World Junior Featherweight Champion Lisa Brown in the third round en route to dominating the rest of the fight and posting a 99-90. 98-91, 99-90 upset victory. Prior to the bout Garside, with only three professional bouts to her credit, was considered too inexperienced to fight the very tough Brown. GARSIDE'S OPPONENT HAS CHANGED

"A Ring of their Own" promoter Arnie Rosenthal assures team Garside that her spot on the all women's boxing series has merely changed opponents. Lakeysha William has pulled out and been replaced with Rita Valentini. The bout is set for October 8th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Garside was recently turned down by Team Terri Cruz for a bout in Tacoma, Washington on September 17, 2005. Garside's aggressive boxing style has been exposed and not many boxers want to take the challenge.

WOMEN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE ON AGAIN

Boxing Canada reports that the Women's World Championships have been brought back to life in a last-minute joint partnership between Russian cities and AIBA. The event, originally slated to run September 18 - 26 in St. Petersburg, has now been re-scheduled to September 25 - October 3 in Podolsk, Russia. Podolsk is located approximately one hour from Moscow.

The association is ecstatic that Katie Dunn and Mary Spencer will once again get their chance to represent Canada at the World Championships. But the down-side of it all is that these athletes will have to re-shuffle their schedules yet again, along with the financial implications of booking, un-booking, and re-booking flights. Boxing Canada stated that many of the women, who had planned their vacation time for this event, and then rescinded, now have to fight for those days off all over again. Some may not be successful.

September 11, 2005

WOMEN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS KNOCKED OUT

Boxing Canada confirmed this morning that the Women's World Championships, scheduled to run September 18-29, have been canceled. The decision by the Russian Federation and St. Petersburg hosting committee was a financial one, with the group deciding it could not afford to run the event.

This is devastating news for the national team athletes, coaches, and support staff who have been preparing for the event all year long. Many individuals have sacrificed their work holiday hours and other obligations to attend the tournament. Not to mention the mental and physical training that the boxers have endured in preparation for the championships.

The future of women's boxing at the 2008 Olympics now hangs in the balance. Katie Dunn and Mary Spencer of Windsor were both good favourites to win gold at the World Championships and now it remains unclear as to whether they will get their Olympic shot in Beijing.

Randon Acts of Poetry paid a visit to the Border City Boxing Club this week! Here is a piece poet John B. Lee composed after reading at the club:

Wishing I Were Me

in the close torpor of the boxing club
with its salt-sweat smells
its human aromas
its musty scents of stained leather and wet shoes
and its oddly midday
indoor quality of light
like wind-drifted gauzy curtains
and dust on glass in lonesome houses
I am reading poems
with the turnbuckle to my back
and the white mat at my shoulder
within the skip-rope swish going thwick thwick
like a slip-foot dance
of a whip in little whirls of yellow earth
glove on glove pop pop flat handed
philosopher of naugehyde
pop pop and a point is made
like the punctuated metaphysics
of a palpable hit
and as I say, I am reading
among these pugilists, these aspirants
who begin to gather
in the sound shadow of my words
mostly, they are big-eyed children
looking up in blue amaze
round-souled, astonished
making me wish I were me.
